ISO, the International Organization for Standardization, was founded in 1946 by delegates from 25 countries and began operations in 1947. At the end of 2006, the number of national ISO members had risen to 158. The organization is a vast network of national standards bodies from all regions of the world, served and supported by a Central Secretariat in Geneva.  ISO’s declared mission is to be the leading value-adding platform and partner for the production of global, market-relevant international standards, covering product specifications, services, test methods, conformity assessment, management and organizational practices.
